1. What is a single phase transformer?

A single-phase transformer is a transformer that operates on a single-phase power supply.

A single-phase transformer consists of a magnetic core as the magnetic transformer part and the transformer copper winding as the electrical part.

A single-phase transformer is an efficient electrical device with very low losses as its operation does not involve any mechanical friction.

A single-phase transformer is a type of power transformer that utilizes single-phase alternating current, which means that the transformer relies on voltage cycles that operate in uniform time periods.

They are typically used to reduce long distance and local transmission currents to power levels more suitable for residential and light commercial applications.

The ratio of the primary (input) winding to the secondary (output) winding determines the change in current. Circuits can be isolated using a 1:1 ratio single-phase transformer.

Single-phase transformers obey Ohm’s law and do not generate or remove power other than the tiny inherent losses due to heat.

2. What is a single-phase autotransformer?

A single-phase autotransformer refers to a device that uses a single-phase power supply to change the AC voltage using the principle of electromagnetic induction.

The single-phase autotransformer is specially designed for the needs of voltage conversion. It is made of imported cold-rolled silicon steel and is made of high-temperature-resistant and high-insulation composite materials. It has the characteristics of low loss, high efficiency, low temperature rise, and reliable use.

Single-phase autotransformers are widely used in stable voltage power consumption of large electromechanical equipment in the fields of industry, transportation, post and telecommunications, etc.

3. How does a single-phase autotransformer work?

The single-phase autotransformer is based on the principle of electromagnetic induction. 

The primary winding and the secondary winding are sheathed on a common iron core, and the mutual coupling between the magnetic circuit and the circuit realizes the transfer of energy from the primary winding to the secondary winding.

The operation of a transformer is based on the principle of mutual inductance between two coils wound on the same magnetic core.

How a single-phase transformer works

When an alternating voltage (V1) is applied to the primary winding, an alternating magnetic flux (Φm) sets up in the core and links with the secondary winding.

I.e. The magnetic flux links both the windings of the transformer magnetically. This magnetic flux induces EMF E1 in the primary winding and E2 in the secondary winding according to Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction.

4. Single phase autotransformer structure

An auto transformer consists of a single copper wire, which is common in both primary as well as secondary circuit. The copper wire is wound a laminated silicon steel core, with at least three tappings taken out. Secondary and primary circuit share the same neutral point of the winding.

The construction is well explained in the diagram. Variable turns ratio at secondary can be obtained by the tappings of the winding (as shown in the figure), or by providing a smooth sliding brush over the winding. Primary terminals are fixed.

Thus, in an auto transformer, you may say, primary and secondary windings are connected magnetically as well as electrically.

  5. Places without severe shaking and shock vibration.
  6. In a medium environment without explosion hazard.
