Automatic voltage stabilizer Buying Guide

content

1. What is an automatic voltage stabilizer?

Automatic Voltage Regulator It is an electrical appliance designed to provide a constant voltage at its output terminals to a load regardless of changes in the input or input supply voltage. It protects equipment or machinery from overvoltage, undervoltage and other voltage surges.

It is also known as Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR). Voltage regulators are the first choice for expensive and precious electrical equipment to protect them from harmful low/high voltage fluctuations. Some of these devices are air conditioners, offset presses, laboratory equipment, industrial machines and medical instruments.

2. What is an AC automatic voltage stabilizer?

AC voltage regulators are mainly used for AC power.

An AC automatic voltage regulator, or AC AVR, is engineered to ensure that the output voltage remains consistently at a predetermined level irrespective of fluctuations that may occur on the input voltage.

The automatic voltage regulator is built with control components that senses change in the output voltage and compensate for the difference accordingly.

As a result, connected systems receive a constant and stable voltage at all times.

3. What are the types of automatic voltage stabilizers?

There are many types of automatic voltage stabilizers. Shuogong Power mainly produces the following three types of automatic voltage stabilizers.

  • Single-phase automatic voltage stabilizer
  • Household automatic voltage stabilizer
  • Three-phase automatic voltage stabilizer
  • Oil-immersed three-phase automatic voltage stabilizer
  • Three-phase high-precision automatic voltage stabilizer.

The rated capacity of our automatic voltage stabilizer can be selected from 0.5KVA to 2000KVA. We are a voltage regulator manufacturer and also support customization of various voltage regulators.

4. What are the benefits of using a voltage stabilizer?

All electrical/ electronic devices are designed and manufactured to operate at maximum efficiency with a typical voltage supply which is known as the nominal operating voltage.

Depending on the designed safe operating limit, the working range (with optimum efficiency) of an electrical/ electronic device may be limited to ± 5%, ±10% or more.

The voltage fluctuations (rise or dip of the magnitude of rated voltage) are quite common in many areas, especially at terminated lines.

The most common reasons for voltage fluctuations are lighting, electrical faults, faulty wiring and periodic turning off the device. These fluctuations create mishap to the electrical equipments or appliances.

Long time over voltage will result

  • Permanent damage to the equipment
  • Insulation damage to the windings
  • Unwanted interruption in the load
  • Increased losses in cables and associated equipments
  • De-rating life of the appliance
  • Long time under voltage will result

Malfunctioning of the equipment

  • Longer working periods (as in case of resistive heaters)
  • Reduced performance of the equipment
  • Drawing large currents which further lead to overheating
  • Computational errors
  • Reduced speed of motors

5. How does an automatic voltage stabilizer work?

In a voltage regulator, voltage correction under overvoltage and undervoltage conditions is performed through two basic operations, boost and buck operations.

These operations can be performed manually with switches or automatically with electronic circuits.

During undervoltage conditions, boost operation increases the voltage to the rated level, while buck operation reduces the voltage level during overvoltage conditions.

The concept of stabilization involves increasing or decreasing the voltage of the mains supply. To perform such tasks, the stabilizers use transformers connected to switching relays in different configurations.

Some stabilizers use transformers with taps on the windings to provide different voltage corrections, while servo stabilizers use autotransformers for extensive corrections.

To understand this concept, let’s consider a simple step-down transformer rated at 230/12V, its connection to these operations is given below.

How Voltage Regulators Work

The diagram above illustrates a boost configuration, where the polarity of the secondary winding is oriented in such a way that its voltage is added directly to the primary voltage.

Therefore, in an undervoltage condition, the transformer (whether it is a tap transformer or an autotransformer) is switched by a relay or solid state switch, which adds additional voltage to the input voltage.

The working principle of the voltage stabilizer

In the above diagram, the transformer is connected in a buck configuration, where the polarity of the secondary coil is oriented in such a way that its voltage is subtracted from the primary voltage.

During an overvoltage condition, the switching circuit converts the connection to the load to this configuration.

How Voltage Regulators Work

The diagram above shows a two-stage regulator that uses two relays to provide constant AC power to the load during overvoltage and undervoltage conditions.

By switching the relays, buck and boost operations can be performed for two specific voltage fluctuations, one for undervoltage, such as 195V, and the other for overvoltage, such as 245V.

In the case of a tapped transformer type stabilizer, different taps are switched depending on the amount of boost or buck voltage required.

However, in the case of an autotransformer type stabilizer, the motor (servo motor) is used with sliding contacts to get a boost or step down voltage from the autotransformer because it contains only one winding.

6. What is the difference between a voltage stabilizer and a transformer?

Although the appearance of the automatic voltage stabilizer and the transformer are very familiar, there are essential differences between the automatic voltage stabilizer and the transformer in terms of working principle.

A transformer changes the voltage from one level to another, like a 240v to 110v transformer, but it does not regulate voltage.

Instead of changing the voltage to a different level, a voltage stabilizer regulates the voltage to keep it stable.

This can be useful in situations where the incoming power supply is unreliable, much like how a human body needs its internal temperature regulating to stay healthy.

In fact, some people refer to voltage stabilizers as “voltage regulators” because they do exactly that—they regulate the voltage. This can prevent any damage or malfunctions from occurring due to high or low voltages.

6. What are the advantages of an automatic voltage stabilizer?

Every electric device at your place is designed in a way that works correctly under different levels of voltage. Frequent or recurring voltage fluctuations can result in equipment damage permanently and may affect the wiring of your house too.

A voltage stabilizer acts as a protective shield and reduces chances of malfunction. It also helps increase the life of various appliances.

Installing a voltage stabilizer is essential to protect expensive electrical appliances such as Air Conditioners, television, refrigerator and computers.

7. What are the disadvantages of automatic voltage stabilizers?

The role of the automatic voltage stabilizer is mainly used for voltage regulation. It doesn’t actually have any downsides.

The traditional oil-immersed automatic voltage regulator is relatively slow to adjust the voltage. If your voltage fluctuates frequently, you must choose a high-precision automatic voltage stabilizer.

8. How to choose an automatic voltage stabilizer?

Check the rated power of your device.

To determine the power rating of your device, check the manufacturer’s label: you will usually find a voltage rating (V) and a current rating (A).

You can then calculate the power requirement for your device by multiplying the voltage rating by the current rating in watts. If you are unsure about this step, consult your user guide or manual.

If you still can’t figure out what’s going on, consult an expert; it’ll cost a bit more money up-front but will save you from burning out your devices in the long run.

Carefully study the technical characteristics of the stabilizer.

When buying a stabilizer, you should pay attention to such indicators as voltage range, power, efficiency and other characteristics. The more detailed the technical characteristics of the stabilizer are specified in the passport, the more expensive it will cost. But this is not an indicator of quality.

In order to choose an optimal voltage stabilizer that meets your needs, you need to carefully study its technical characteristics. This article will help you figure out which stabilizer parameters are important and what they mean in practice.

Input and output power is one of the main parameters when choosing a stabilizer. Based on it, you can calculate how many electrical devices can be connected at once to a particular model of equipment. For example, if you connect all household appliances using one outlet with a total power of 1 kW, then for stable operation, you should purchase a stabilizer with an input power rating from 1 kW or higher (preferably 110 – 115% of the total connected load).

Efficiency is usually indicated as a percentage (70-90%), but not all manufacturers write about it in their specifications. The higher this parameter value is, the better the performance stability system will work under high loads in contact with electrical appliances that consume large amounts of energy: heating elements or motors.

9. What is the price of automatic voltage stabilizer?

The price of automatic voltage stabilizers is relatively wide. First of all, if you want to buy an automatic voltage stabilizer, you must first select the type, power and input and output voltage of the transformer.

This will allow you to get the correct automatic voltage regulator price.

Below I have listed the market prices of some commonly used automatic voltage regulators. for reference only.
